FROM THE PRESIDENTS

Dear Friends,

Friends of the Library has much to look forward to as Ceil Hardin takes on the responsibilities of FOL president. I am confident she will do an outstanding job and it will be my pleasure to work with her as Past- President. The years 2008-10 will be great years for our organization and our Library!

Again, my appreciation goes to the 06-07 and 07-08 Boards, Cora Fay and FOL members and volunteers who made my tenure as president a wonderful experience!

Charlene Stewart

Dear Friends,

As July 1 nears, I am excited as well as anxious about beginning my 2-year term as president. I am excited about the possibility of beginning new programs and enhancing existing resources and activities at our Statesboro Regional Library. I am anxious about getting organized and following the leadership standards set by my predecessors. We have dedicated board members and volunteers that I will be relying on heavily for support.

This organization is only as good as its members so I want to urge all members to contact me and let me know what directions you would like to see your organization take this year. Any projects, programs, or activities that you would like to see changed or implemented, I would like to hear about. Contact me by email ceil@hardinsystems.com or phone (839-3 150) with your input.

Have a great summer.

Guest Author Shares Newest Cook Book with Friends

Fifty Friends attended the May, 2008 Annual Meeting where they watched Damon Lee Fowler prepare a favorite recipe from The Savannah Cookbook. Twelve lucky Friends were chosen to taste the delicious dish which is just one of hundreds featured in his latest work. Mr. Fowler is a nationally recognized authority on Southern cooking and its history. He fell in love with Savannah nearly thirty years ago when he arrived as a preservationist intern with the Savannah Landmark Project. During that assignment he spent his free time exploring the ancient city. He soon fell in love with Savannah and its peopleboth changing his life.

Spring Book Sale Business Was Brisk!

The Spring Book Sale was a true success bringing in almost $3000 dollars. Those members who donated books made a huge contribution to the success of the sale along with the volunteers who helped set up, shelve books as others were sold and helped break down. Fund Raising Chair Ruth Whitworth, Treasurer Sally Adams and her assistant Henrietta Royal were present throughout the sale making for a smooth operation. Thanks, Ladies!

“Libraries Are Awesome” Program Remains Popular

Four years ago Cora Fay originated a school outreach program and called it “Libraries Are Awesome”. From its inception teachers have welcomed FOL volunteers into their 4th grade classrooms to read stories to their students and tell how our library can benefit them and their families.

This year 898 students attending eight schools participated in LAA. Special thanks go to FOL volunteers Janet Ward, Julie Harwell, Claire Horn, Jean Burnett, Terri DeLoach, Pat Duke, Sue Holt, Durelle Tuggle, Shirley Jordan, Dorothy Kelly and Fay Goodson who shared our awesome Library and the joy of reading with Bulloch County’s 4th graders. Verdery Kennedy led the volunteers in an orientation session prior to the school visits.

To Out-going Board Members

Best wishes to those who have served our organization with their time, talents, and energy.

Sally Adams, Treasurer

Nancy Davis, Corresponding Secretary

Henrietta Royal, Special Assignments

Summer Reading Program
Takes Off Like a Lightning Bug!

Over 350 children caught the Reading Bug during the first week of the library’s Summer Reading Program, and before the summer is over that number may exceed 500. A wide variety of special presentations are offered each week through July 17. Children ages 3—18 may join, attending programs and returning reading folders each week to receive fun prizes and special coupons from area supporters. Teens 13 and up participate separately with their very own programs and events. In addition to ongoing monthly programs like Read to Rover and Craft Time Tuesday that appeal to the whole family, there will also be a summer series of weekly programs for toddlers.

A Reader of the Week will be chosen from the participants each week. Children who return folders at least three out of seven weeks will receive a certificate at the end of the summer and will be eligible to enter the drawing for Reader of the Summer. The school having the most readers will be awarded the Summer Readers Cup and will be able to keep the trophy at the school all year!

For a complete listing of summer programs and activities, please visit the library’s webpage at http://strl.info
