The spring brings so many activities in nature as well as in our lives. Please notice all of the various events related to your library in this newsletter as well as the library website (http://strl.info/). There is even a link to our Friends website there (www.statesborofriends.org). I personally appreciate all the professional and volunteer staff that make our library the awesome resource it is to our community.

The Community Read 2010 in partnership with the Averitt Center for the Arts features the Norman Rockwell Exhibit at the Averitt Center through May 7.  The Childhood Adventures Art Exhibit will be on display in the Library Community Room until April 10.  There will be a Book Discussion of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in the atrium the very night of the Friends Only Book Sale on Thursday, April 8.  Along with the Community Read, the FREE 1972 film version of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is showing at the Emma Kelly Theater on Sunday afternoon, April 11.  Five-hundred copies of Tom Sawyer sold -- we appreciate our Friends, the two area Rotary Clubs and the Pilot Club for providing the funds.  Everyone has enjoyed Tom’s escapades!

We have the following items for sale at the Library -- plus tax -- Book Bag ($3.00), Diskette (75¢) and Flash Drive ($10.00).  There has been an interest in providing these “necessities of library life” for some time.  This is a new venture for us!

Geek Week (March 15 - 21) was a big hit -- We enjoyed participating in this unique pilot program generously funded by the Gates Foundation this year and last.  We decorated the library, had a drawing for over thirty “What do you Geek?” T-shirts and conducted a favorite book contest. Bulloch County Commissioner Chairman Garrett Nevil prepared an OFFICIAL PROCLAMATION for the event.

We will be setting up an EVERLASTING Book Sale at the library following the Friends Spring Book Sale, April 8-9-10.  We expect customers to place their money in a designated locked box.  Library staff members will stock the shelves and stow away books for the Fall Book sale as usual.

SRL Facebook FANS reached 157 this week.  We are excited to share the wonderful news of our library there and on the Regional Public Libraries’ website at www.strl.info.  The demand for library assistance and service continues to keep us all on our toes.  The parking lot continues to be full and a line forms outside the door at 9:00 a.m. most mornings.

Along with libraries across the state and the nation, we continue to respond to the needs of area citizens.  This thought struck me -- we check out computers to people who do not have computers just as years ago we checked out books to people who did not have books.  The Statesboro Regional Library is here for everyone’s information, educational or work-related needs -- just as it should be!

 ANNUAL MEETING AGENDA

On Monday, May 17th, at 7pm in our Library Community Room, our annual meeting will be held to vote on the 2010/12 slate of board members and install these officers. Four newcomers to the proposed board include: Walt Strickland, Lawton Sack, Susan Humma, and Curtis Woody.

Walt is a past FOL board member and has played an integral part in setting up and tearing down our book sales for several years. He retired from the navy and later owned and operated a paint store. Presently, Walt is an antique/household appraiser and conducts estate sales.

Lawton Sack feels he was raised at the Statesboro-Bulloch County Library since his mother, Jane Sack, worked there during his early years. He is a lifetime member of our FOL organization. Professionally, he serves as the CFO of James L. Oates, III Enterprises, Inc., a Register-based plumbing company. He is husband of Melissa and father to William, Evamarie, and Emma.

Susan Humma holds a degree in Library Science from Emory. She retired from Statesboro High School where she served as a media specialist. She is presently heavily involved with a therapy dog named Heidi. Susan is married to John. Their four children have provided them with 5 grandchildren who keep them very busy.

Curtis Woody hails from Claxton but has settled in Statesboro with his wife and two sons. He teaches speech/communication, strategic marketing, and public relations at GSU in the Communication Arts Department. He also owns a marketing business, Concepts-Unlimited, LLC.

Following the election and installation of the new board, Dr. Bede Mitchell will speak to us. Besides serving as Dean of Libraries at GSU, Dr. Mitchell is also president of our state organization, Friends of Georgia Libraries (FOGL). He and Statesboro Regional Library Director, Sharon Rowe presently serve as co-chairs of the Georgia Literary Festival which will be held in Statesboro next fall. Dr. Mitchell will share information about activities connected with the upcoming literary festival as well as FOGL.

We will also recognize our newest life time members of our organization. There will be a reception with refreshments immediately following the meeting. Please stay and meet your fellow Friends.

JOIN THE CROWD AT THE MEET THE AUTHOR PROGRAM

Lynn Lilly, Program Chair (lklilly@ameritech.net)

Lucy Adams and Hugh and Carol Nourse brought the biggest crowds of the year for the Meet the Author series.  They packed the Community Room and their autographed books sold out during the receptions.  Don't miss our last program of the season -- a warm, humorous and delightful summer stroll through our shared southern story.

Betsy Nichols, author of When Summer Was in the Meadow, Tuesday, April 6 at 7pm

Nominated for the Georgia Author of the Year Award, this beautiful memoir draws us into life in the South in the 20s and early 30s.  Betsy Nichols’ evocative story is based on the real-life story of Evelyn Johnson, a child who lets us see how the world of church picnics and neighbors intersects with Lindbergh, FDR and the Great Depression.  Amazon.com says the novel “reveals with poignancy and humor life as it was lived by ordinary people during a critical period in American history…In a larger sense, however, this is a story about ourselves and the power of remembrance to shape our lives and the lives of those who follow us."
